An exclusive event with award-winning filmmaker, Phumi Morare

We are delighted to invite you to an exclusive screening of Lakutshon’ Ilanga (When The Sun Sets) and Why The Cattle Wait, followed by a Q&A with award-winning South African filmmaker and UCT alumna Phumi Morare (BBusSci 2009).

After building a career at Goldman Sachs, in London, and McKinsey & Co in Johannesburg, Phumi made the bold decision to leave the corporate world and pursue filmmaking. Her work draws on intimate human stories that examine history, culture, resilience, and the human experience. This special screening will showcase two acclaimed films that demonstrate her distinctive voice and storytelling.

Lakutshon’ Ilanga (When The Sun Sets)

Inspired by an incident from Phumi’s mother’s life, this moving short film follows a young nurse in 1980s South Africa forced to confront her worst fears when her activist younger brother fails to return home from school. The film was shortlisted for the 94th Academy Awards, won an NAACP Image Award, and was acquired by a multinational entertainment company.

Why The Cattle Wait

A captivating folklore love story about a goddess who must persuade the one human she loves to return to the eternal world before she destroys the earth. The film won Best Short Film at the 2026 South Africa Film & TV Awards and has been praised for its powerful and masterful storytelling.

Following the screenings, Phumi will join the audience for a Q&A about her creative journey, her decision to leave a corporate career for filmmaking, and the stories, histories and experiences that inspire her work.
